Halloween Happenings in Buena Park – the Halloween Capital of Southern California

When the spirits beckon and the ghouls are haunting your dreams, pack your suitcase full of your creepiest Halloween costumes and head to Buena Park – the Halloween Capital of Southern California.

Not only is the Orange County region your family fun, amusement park and dining headquarters, but it also goes all-out for Halloween. Just 85 miles north of San Diego and 35 miles south of Los Angeles, Buena Park is easy to access and offers perfect weather this time of year.

The essence of Halloween oozes throughout the entire city. Starting with Knott’s Berry Farm Halloween event, Knott’s Scary Farm, the spooky factor can be felt in the hotels, restaurants, and shops around town.

FRIGHTFUL ATTRACTIONS

Who is brave enough to play in the dark? Knott’s Scary Farm is the Halloween event of Knott’s Berry Farm. It is the largest and most haunting Halloween experience in Southern California that is scary, horrific and gruesome in the best way. The fully-transformed theme park features haunted mazes and attractions, sinister shows, and more than 1,000 terrifying creatures lurking in the fog and hiding in every corner of the park. The park fully morphs into a new monster of excitement. Along with the frightful attractions, the theme parks will host four haunting experiences both in and outside of the park including Boo Fest, Into the Fog: A Scary Farm Tribute Art Show, Timber Mountain Log Ride: Halloween Hootenanny and Time Zombies.

STAYS AND SCARES

The spirits are calling and they want you to book the Stay and Scare package at the Knott’s Berry Farm Hotel—if you dare! The Knott’s Berry Farm Hotel now offers a Stay and Scare package to help visitors dive in and fully experience the spooky festivities happening throughout the city with a few perks.

This package comes with tickets to Knott’s Berry Farm, a commemorative t-shirt and more. With dozens of hotels offering suites, swimming pools, free breakfast and shuttle service, staying in a Buena Park hotel for a Halloween overnight lends itself well to enjoying more than a few fall/Halloween-themed adventures.

SPOOKY FUN

The light-hearted spirit of Halloween makes its home at Knott’s Spooky Farm. With younger children in mind, the theme park transforms into a Halloween wonderland. Kids of all ages are welcome to wear their best costumes as they parade, participate in costume contests and trick-or-treat throughout the park. In true Halloween fashion, Snoopy and the Peanuts Gang make an appearance in a seasonal live performance. “The Monsters are Coming, Charlie Brown” takes the stage at the Camp Snoopy Theatre and the Halloween Hootenanny returns as The Timber Mountain Log Ride transforms with spooky but family-friendly surprises. This seasonal event is designed with the youngest Knott’s Berry Farm visitors, so there is no need to worry about any scary characters, only Halloween fun!

The popular dinner show, Pirates Dinner Adventure, turns dark for the Halloween season to resurrect their haunting Vampirate’s Halloween Dinner Show. The interactive performance takes the audience back in time to the 1800s as they climb aboard the ship of the Evil Captain Sebastian the Black. This Halloween twist on the popular Pirates Dinner Adventure brings feats of aerial artistry, swordplay, death-defying stunts and dynamic duels as the crew of “Vampire Pirates” attempts to defeat the Vampire Hunter. If anyone is preparing to catch a weekend show, wear your best costume and you’ll have a chance to win the Vampirate bounty!

FALL FESTIVALS

The spirit of the holidays and festivities of the season spillover into the weekend. Buena Park’s Historic District adds to the spooky fun with the Old Tyme Fall Festival. The “Boo-uena Park” festival showcases the City’s historic structures with haunted tours of the Whitaker-Jaynes Estate, storytelling in the Bacon House and much more. It is a day full of on-stage entertainment, food trucks, activities for kids and spooky stories. The seasonal event showcases a diverse range of local entertainment as families taste delicious plates from local food vendors, including tacos from Poquito Mas.

The fall festival is a family-friendly event filled with fun as kids can create and take home fall-themed crafts, sing along to live musical performances and play fun old-time games. Plus, Halloween-themed vendors will also be onsite selling tricks and treats for the whole family.

Admission to the festival and the magic show are free, and all craft-making experiences are available while supplies last. Free parking will be located across Beach Blvd. in the City Hall parking lot at 6650 Beach Blvd.

Another festival of fun is Silverado Days. The 63rd Annual Silverado Days takes over William Peak Park for this three-day festival. The festival is suited for family and friends to enjoy an entire weekend of fun and a bit of friendly competition. New to the lineup of Silverado Days festivities is the American Corn Hole Tournament where all members of the family can try their hand to earn bragging rights of being the best.

The free event features dozens of carnival rides, delicious food from local vendors, crafts, contests and exciting competitions, including the World Amateur Arm Wrestling Championship.

HAUNTING TREATS, BITES AND DRINKS

As Porto’s Bakery & Cafe—named Yelp’s #1 Restaurant in the US, is known for its delightful array of pastries, cakes and savory treats, the popular restaurant honors fall and its holidays with a selection of festive menu items. A seasonal treat fit for breakfast, lunch or dinner is their pumpkin muffin made with organic pumpkin puree topped with a sweet, flaky streusel & powdered sugar. Following the roster of fall holidays, the bakery takes time to celebrate the Mexican holiday, Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), with their to-die-for Calavera (skull)-inspired Dia de Los Muertos cookie. Other fall favorites include the Dutch apple pie and the Milk ‘n’ Mango—a festively-colored version of Porto’s signature tres leches cake filled with mango compote and whipped cream.

The 17th Century, witch-themed bar, The Cauldron unveils the mystic nature of Halloween year-round but particularly sparks up this time of year. Visitors are transported back in time to a French-inspired pub adorned with antique furniture, a spell-binding cauldron, and secrets hidden around every corner. The decor is mesmerizing in tandem with their similarly stylized menu including familiar bites with a wicked twist. Hearty home-cooked comfort food compliments a selection of specialty drinks and themed beverages including the Knotty Kid, a magical splash of vodka & lemon poured over Boysenberry cotton candy and the Grey Witch, a floral mix of gin, champagne and crème de violette.

On Halloween night, the bar will host its highly popular Cauldron Costume Contest. The frightful night of fun is an opportunity for patrons to don their best costumes to compete for a fabulous prize. It’s the place to be on Halloween night when everyone vies for the top spot in the annual costume contest.

Heading into the late hours of the night, the bar adds blissful enchantments with The Witching Hour deals from 12:00 AM to 2:00 AM are every Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday nights. The creepily good deals led visitors to indulge at the witch-themed sanctuary, Cauldron Spirits, and Brews for some spooky cocktails. Specialty potions include the Grey Witch—French 75 with Nolet’s gin and a hint of Violette, and the Bourbon and Brimstone—Dickel whiskey, thyme, honey and lemon.

This October, don your witch’s hat or Superman cape and head over to Orange County, your headquarters for family-friendly Halloween fun!
